How do we know when to let our hard work out into the world? To hit "send" and wave goodbye? It can be difficult to know when to let go of something that we're working on. I struggle with this as much as the next person. But now, I ask myself two things…
Trauma never really goes away. It comes back at different points in our life through two channels: vulnerable times and triggers. A “vulnerable time” is a non-everyday event including yes, a pandemic like Covid-19.
Cult commands are the negative self-talk in our minds. They’re usually mean and unfounded. And, they stick around, preying on our vulnerabilities. We need to do something about them! There's no quick hack here. No magic wand that will erase our cult commands. But, we can change them.
Closure is a cousin of perfection. Unattainable, in part, because the goal posts keep moving. And try as we might, we can't effort our way into it. We can’t effort our way to closure because the control we have over our feelings and outcomes is limited. But we can do something else instead.
