Connection is the best thing you can offer a survivor patient. They don't need you to heal or fix them.
My clients tell me that when they're working with survivors, it can feel as if they aren't making a difference. They're right and they're not alone. When even seemingly minor issues can be a stressful challenge, what can you do?
When you truly want to connect with patients, you must consider the space in which you want the connection to happen. This is especially important to connect with a population that has a harder time with trust, like abuse survivors.
Ask any hotline volunteer; empathy can go a long way to helping someone change. You don't need to necessarily solve her problem.
